Summer Projects

Wednesday August 10th, in the afternoon | Comments: 3

I'm home =) These photo's were taken in Heerjansdam. I took some nice pictures of the area around here back in January, but I thought I'd add some fresh ones anyway.

Being the true workaholic that I am, I decided to make a quick documentary. A documentary on what I do that keeps me from being the laid-back, reliable person that I usually am. Why is it that back in December '04 I was able to post every other day, whereas now I barely write once a month? It's all in my new movie posted here (direct link to BitTorrent: here).

Ok, so actually that's just a 3 minute recording of my lava lamp and... I'm an ass. 8) On the other hand, it really isn't so far off if you look at some of my projects. ;)

Anyway, I'm thinking I should write up some reports on the many, many things I've worked on in the past year or so. I count:

  • Twelve websites which I created and/or did significant amounts of work for.
  • Two commerical pieces of software for which I did the bulk of the work.
  • One high performance C++ library (as an ongoing research project).

Yet Another Beautiful Picture Of Colgate

Let's summarize the past month in a PowerPoint-style bulleted list:

  • Being busy can be both rewarding and frustrating.
    1. Sometimes it is rewarding
    2. Sometimes it is frustrating
    3. Usually it is some combination of the two

Phew I would *not* have been able to pull that off without PowerPoint. Actually I don't really care about PowerPoint, unlike these people...

Why is any of this relevant? Well... It's that time of summer at Colgate. It's hot, humid and it's starting to empty out. The PowerPoint thing was just a loose association (I should make a bulleted list > Bulleted lists are on PowerPoint slides a lot > I should do a web search for people who hate PowerPoint).

The Research

If you think loose associations are a bad sign, wait until you hear this: I've been getting paid these past seven weeks to make them 8) It's this wonderful thing called Research. Two years ago I did some interesting stuff on Visual Features of Graphs, combining some interesting Computer Science with Cognitive Psychology.

This year is a little more serious. I'm working on a novel way to implement some spatial data structures. In case you didn't realise those words work together (i.e. you are not a Computer Science person): click the link. I've been doing this under the supervision of Professor Ohsumi, who has been a great help so far. I feel very... up to speed... on C++ if I do say so myself 8)

Touring the Finger Lakes

Thursday June 2nd, in the wee hours of the morning | Comments: 7

Woooh, dude. It's an update 8) Here are some pictures of a little two day tour of the Finger Lakes that Kaleena and I took during Senior Week (the week between finals and the graduation ceremony). I also posted some movies on the site. They're pretty big, so special thanks to the 'early adopters' who are hosting these files. You will need BitTorrent in order to download these files. On the plus side: the downloads should be reasonably fast... once they get started :-/ If you want to help out, just leave your BitTorrent program on after you finish downloading; that way you'll automagically help out 8)

Anyway, I will update this post with some explanations... later. As of right now (03:27) I'm a little too tired for that, so enjoy the pictures and movies :) Hint: the movie 'speech.MOV' was part of Kaleena's graduation address. Stay tuned for more info and a crapload of pictures of graduation... Cheers!

Hamilton, New York area

Saturday May 7th, around lunchtime | Comments: 11

Finals are OVER! What this means is:

  • Kaleena is done at Colgate!
  • Everyone who's still on campus has loads of time on their hands...

We decided to spend some of that extra time taking pictures of the Hamilton area, after grabbing a bite to eat at the Country Inn anyway. Here's the result...

Some more sunset.

UPE Ceremony & Exam Week S05

Monday May 2nd, around coffee time | Comments: 17

I have officially switched to Skype for my telecommunication needs. If you need to 'call' me you should be able to find me 8) I may get a SkypeIn phone no. at some point.

Anyway, here's some random pictures from the last two weeks (since I came back from Russia). It's the Upsilon Pi Epsilon induction ceremony, the Toll House Pie event afterwards and a random dinner at Nichols and Beal last week. Any questions?
