Stage time next week
The weekend's finally here, and of course it's pouring outside. I haven't done much the last couple of days, except get my assignments in on time and going to class. So far my semester's track record is pretty good; I've only missed about 15 minutes of class this semester (this was on Tuesday when I was finishing my ACM application). It's nice to be on top of things; now if only I got on top of the giant pile of papers/clothes/dishes that is room 305.
I don't have much to report about Thursday and Friday (hence the blank spots on the calendar to the right...). I particularly enjoyed my classes the last couple of days. The main reason is probably the fact that I've actually slept decently the last few days. Instead of concentrating on staying awake, I could actually concentrate on my professors -- great stuff. On top of that, all of my classes had one or two interesting things going on in terms of the material. In COSC 304 we're doing push-down automata, which is one of the first topics I genuinely haven't done before. In Economics Professor Mandle convered monopolies. That's something I did do before, but it's been so long that it hardly makes a difference. In German we're combining a lot of things -- the cases, vocabulary, telling time, etc. COSC 420 is currently focused on scope.
I took some nice pictures around Taylor lake on Wednesday -- they're the top three pictures. The second and third are basically the same shot, except that the third is a little over exposed. It's a nice effect though; it makes everything a little easier to identify. The white things in the foreground are Adam and Eve, Colgate's swans.
The fourth photo shows some of Colgate's Autumn colors on Thursday afternoon. I took this along with a bunch of similar ones on my way down the hill after tutoring, so it must have been around 18:30. There was a decent amount of light at that time, so I could take these pictures with relatively short exposure.
On Friday night, Kaleena and I went to see Team America: World Police. It's a pretty funny movie, recorded with good old Thunderbird style puppets (including the rediculous walking!). It's actually not a great movie; it's basically so (intentionally) tacky that it's funny. Good times. Have a look at the site www.teamamericamovie.com if you're interested.
That leaves the fifth picture, which is me sipping some Earl Grey with milk and sugar at La Petite Maison, an amazing restaurant in Waterville, about 20 minutes from Colgate University. I was there today with Kaleena for an early 2 year anniversary celebration -- w00t! The food was absolutely amazing the atmosphere was great. More good times.
Well that covers the last few days. At the moment I'm about ready to get to bed. I have a busy couple of days ahead of me. Tomorrow's my first game with the Colgate International Community Patriots, the soccer team I joined recently. I also have to prepare for my presentation at the Department Tea this Tuesday. Then on Friday I may be one of the hosts at Colgate's World Expo, the University's largest cultural event. In between those two events I'll be trying to keep up with my work. In light of this, here's the official
List of things I am currently worried about
- Colgate International Community Patriots game - Tomorrow late afternoon I'll be doing the goalie thing in an actual soccer game. Let's hope I do well... or let's be optimistic and hope I don't injure myself

- NTSNeditor presentation - This will be taking place on Tuesday at 11:30. I'll be talking about one of the projects I did over summer, focusing on computer human interaction, design patterns and graph drawing aspects of the project.
- Course selection - The course schedule for next semester came in the mail on Friday, which means it's that time again: I have to pick my classes for next semester. There are a bunch of things I can opt to do: finish my Computer Science major, do my Social Sciences distribution, go for a minor in Economics, continue with German, go for honors in the Core Curriculum and/or go for high honors in the Core Curriculum. Some of these choices are mutually exclusive, mainly because I can't take 20 courses in a semester...
- My work - I need to catch up in two of my courses (which I will wisely not name), and keep up with whatever new work I get this week...
- World Expo - Aside from potentially being one of the MCs, I will be performing in the Tae Kwon Do Club demonstration. This means I'll have a busy evening on Friday as well..
So ya, time to get going...

Still quite the busy man huh. Here things are changing rather rapidly. Menno and Monica are looking for a house. They saw an old house nearby Breda and our guess is that they will buy it soon. Eelco is also moving. He will be moving to a house almost next door to his old one. The diffirence is that he will be able to sit outside in the summer because he now has a big balcony. It's also a bit bigger. I am thinking about taking a French course and trying to learn Korean. The one thing doesn't have anything to do with the other. When I read about what you are doing, I start thinking about my work and the things I do next to that. I have been quite busy, but I still have the feeling I am not doing anything special. So Iam going to think about that some more.
It is a normal Sunday afternoon here. KJ is reading the paper, Joerie is sleeping (not like he does anything else) and I am trying to get rid of my headache. Feel like I am hungover, but I did not drink. Next week is fallbreak here. Hopefully I can do a lot of catching up at work, because there are still a lot of cases to be solved. I will have some extra time because the schools will not be open.
Well brother, love you. Talk to you soon.

Nice afterdark photo's (got a tripod?).
reply to this commentFunny headbanging swans in the lakepicture too. long exposure time has nice effects when photographing driveby traffic also.
you can even 'draw' on your photo by moving the camera while its exposed to ,for example, a lightbulb.
Succes.

Yeah, I was wondering about that too, but I thought I was just being stupid!
By the way, Pieterson, I guess it's not so hard to get on top of the mess in your room!

Actually I don't have a tripod, but put the camera on the benches we have by the 'lake.' I put it on auto timer so that I wouldn't move the shot while pressing the button. I'll see if I can come up with something artistic in the lightbulb department :p
inspired by hooimama — #8 Actually I was planning on cleaning my stuff, not sitting on it...
inspired by Arjo — #6 Push-down automata are basically finite state machines with an added memory stack. They can be used by compilers to check the grammar of the language. In general they just make nice material for theoretical courses though...

Have not seen you online today, so I will say good night to you by leaving a little message here. Yesterday Mattanja came over and I tried to help her with her maths. Then I remembered... I am not all that good at maths. Hihi. Then we watched Brother Bear during dinner. Quite a nice day. Mattanja is preparing for her exams. Then in the evening we went to see Patrick and Heesoo and talked about their upcoming marriage in Korea. That will probably take place in June 2005... so we had better start saving money for the trip. Looking forward to it! I told you this week the schools are closed, so I thought it would be a little more quiet. But is was a very busy but also a funny day. Today we were talking about realityshows like You're wife my wife or something... One joke after another....
Just now I got back from Jan-Arie and Rose because I was helping J-A with an English assignment. Quite funny having an English conversation in front of a mic in a Dutch livingroom.
Last night Joerie kept me awake. Now it is getting cold here he sleeps on our bed. But he has the habbit of always wanting to lay in between my feet. Or sometimes het tries to push your head of the pillow and lay against your shoulder. This morning my alarm went off. The only thing KJ said was... looks like a callcentre overhere. Offcourse he doesn't remember saying that. That is one of our morning rituals... actually quite funny. He is always talking to me but he almost never remembers what he has been saying.
Have you heard anything from Clarice lately? Will you say hi for me if you get to talk to her? Will you also say hi to Kaleena?
Love, your Sista
