Post Election Day
Well the elections are finally done, we'll be listening to Bush talking about the "free nations of the world," and well... life is back to normal. I'm glad Kerry decided to concede rather than let the thing drag on in the courts. Of course it should be noted that Kaleena was particularly disappointed with her home state's performance...
For me, the elections have mainly been an amazing cultural experience. The elections here were a lot more of an 'event' than they are in The Netherlands. Hundreds of students went to the COOP (Campus Center) to hang out and watch the results come in. The place was completely decorated and featured food specialties from the swing states.
See the top picture for the response of one of the Colgate bloggers (currently available live at http://bookexchange.colgate.edu/colgate/item/30).
Even with the past few years' events (the coming / mostly going of LPF, Leefbaar Nederland, etc.), I don't think Dutch politics will ever be as spectacular as it is in the United States. The comparison between the US and the EU is even more sad if you look at the turnout rate. In the words of Kaleena, International Relations major: "Europeans can't appreciate a Good Thing." I somewhat agree, but I probably shouldn't because I haven't bothered to vote... (In my defence, I only recently had my first opportunity to do so.)
In The Netherlands' favor, with the 30+ parties we get to choose from, there is a lot less 'binary' thinking going on. In the United States, it seems a lot of conservatives voted for Bush because of his standpoints regarding gay marriage and stem cell research (he is against both). In other words, despite the fact that some disagree with the war in Iraq, they still voted for Bush because these other issues seemed more important to them. That's a pretty scary compromise if you come to think of it. I also think that the fact that the parties are so regional might be an indication that there is a need for more 'colors' than just (Republican) Red and (Democrat) Blue.
In the getting on with our lives now department
On Sunday, Kaleena went pumpkin carving with Bridget. Bridget took a little silent movie of this (click on the picture to download). The result is... pretty scary. This is what people do for fun here...
Monday was a ever so slightly less eventful day. For me, it was mainly the not-so-busy-day before the storm, as I had an important Computer Science exam on Tuesday. Perk of the day: free food at the study session for said exam. In the good news department: I received payment for one of my summer jobs on Monday.
Tuesday was packed. I got up early to finish studying, then took my exam. It was long and treacherous... I then followed my professor to his presentation about graduate schools. After that I ran to get lunch, then ran back to attend Nii's presentation on Connect-it games (see three pictures on the right). Unfortunately that started ever so slightly early, and on top of that all the seats near the entrance had strategically been barricaded. Kaleena and I decided to follow the presentation from the hallway for a bit, until we scooted off to our respective Economics classes.
Economics brought good news in the form of my exam result (it was better than my previous one). I was a little nervous about that one, because I had a feeling I didn't do well. Oh well...
Tuesday night was election night in more than one way; at 8pm I got to pick my courses for the Spring semester. The result is as follows (see my schedule, bottom image):
- German II, the follow-up of the German course I'm taking now.
- Computer Science algorithms; about efficiency and such
- Macro economics with Professor Tomljanovich.
- Introduction to International Relations (a distribution requirement)
Well... it's exactly 1am now. Great time to hit the sack; cheers!

Hooimama:
Kaleena, we don't blame you for the behaviour of the people in Ohio! We still love you!
This last sentence means your statement about the Europeans isn't quite correct though: we certainly can appreciate a Good Thing, haha!
Pietertie, well done, my boy! My day at the office sure started nicely because I had some stuff to read to start with. Since I "have to" read all the comments too it took me quite a while! Please stay away from Kaleena whenever she's holding a knife! It's scary to see what she could do to your head!
What's pretty scary to me too are the things Nii wrote on the blackboard: for someone as stupid as me games are the things you play with your kids, not the formula's that come before that! If you see what I mean! And I don't blame you if you don't!
By the way: good morning to you all!

While I am reading all comments and new texts on your site, Joerie is sitting next to me, looking at my laptop. Wondering when he can take his place on my lap. I think he has a bad day, because normally he get's his food at 6.30 am but today we got out of bed at 8.30 since I have a day off to pick op de PINDA. The new Dutch licenseplates have a weird number on it. MEOOOOOOOW, JOerie doesn't get enough attention I guess.
Talk to ya all later...after I picked up my new car.

As some of you might have guessed, we got our new car! No more milkshake when driving 100 km/h, no more weird sounds, no more bad music. Have to get a little bit used to the quick reaction of the breaks and steeringwheel. I concluded that the breaks work perfectly hahahaha. Pinda has ABS as well. Pieter, I'll send you a picture tomorrow (made one this evening but it is to dark).
