Week 10: Check.

Saturday November 13th, in the middle of the night

Puppy.

Not much news from here. It's progressively getting colder, slippier and darker. I think I'm having some target fixation issues, because I don't remember much happening this week except for my exam. Fortunately I also don't recall having any exams next week, so my reporting should be a little more regular.

In the search engine department

It looks like my little pet peeve has paid off -- a search for Students and Alumni for Colgate on www.google.com now turns up this site as well as a Syracuse news report. The news report quotes one of the most prominent alumni behind the organization, saying that "The principal goal is to have the college reconsider the need to buy the fraternity houses." Now isn't that much clearer than... well... any of the content on their website? Why not present a well-argued case in favor of that rather than beat around the bush with other accusations?

I have a feeling that most students have moved on after last week. So to not go out of fashion, I will refrain from mentioning Students and Alumni for Colgate unless something interesting comes up. I don't think that's very likely, though.

What ap department

Like I said, this was a very work-oriented type of week. Today's image is a picture of a drawing I made for Kaleena's Computer Science 102 Project, titled 'Puppy Preschool.' Great stuff.

In a somewhat more serious episode, I've settled on a few design decisions for the work I will be doing this Winter. I'll be using Java Enterprise Edition, so I started reading the (1500 page) tutorial on it. I'm not sure whether that's helping or just making me more confused. It's funny how Java seems to provide exactly what I need for this project, whereas about 2 years ago I would have had some serious doubts Java's use for anything. Of course there are alternatives (C# and .NET in general), but I'll stick with what I know for now...

I think I'll wrap this up before I go off on a tangent too much. More news when I find any... Cheers.

  1. kim sista:

Saturdaymorning, we are up at 8 'o clock. KJ has to work on Saturdays due to the busy period ahead (x-mas cards etc). I decided to pick up my Korean classes in the Korean school in Rotterdam. So I have to pick up Patrick in 20 minutes. I am not entirely sure what to expect since the class has started in september. Class starts at 9.30 and lastst untill 13.00. :-p

Other that that it is quite busy at work and the end of October and the whole month of November our weekends are entirely stuffed with birthdays and a babyshower. Well, I have got to get ready for class, so talk to you later.

In this - I must say rather inspiring - moment of bravery I decided to do the following:

    bookexchange# sh buildworld.sh
    ...
    bookexchange# reboot
bookexchange# Connection to 149.43.80.203 closed by remote host.
    Connection to 149.43.80.203 closed.
    ...
    bookexchange# mergemaster -p
    ...
    bookexchange# cd /usr/src
    bookexchange# make installworld
    ...
    bookexchange# mergemaster
    ...
    bookexchange# reboot
bookexchange# Connection to 149.43.80.203 closed by remote host.
    Connection to 149.43.80.203 closed.
    ...
    bookexchange# uname -a
    FreeBSD bookexchange.colgate.edu 5.3-RELEASE FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE #0: Fri Nov 12 17:10:07 EST 2004 root@bookexchange.colgate.edu:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC i386

Recompiling ports now to make them match the new system's headers, I expect no problems with that.

    Short version:
bookexchange trans-atlanticly upgraded from FreeBSD 5.2.1 to FreeBSD 5.3
    Mission accomplished :-)

inspired by kim sista — #1 Glad to hear you had fun in Korean class. That reminds me -- I should really pick up my German again :) I have a test due tomorrow night, so I think I'll start studying at some point today...

inspired by Arjo Hooimeijer — #3 Congratulations; I slept through all of that 8) Thanks. I'mna run J2EE on it too if I can figure out how (I think officially FreeBSD has no support for Java). If that doesn't work out I'll be running it on my computer...

So yah, I'm going to Bridget's aunt house for a good chunk of the day today. I'm wondering what to bring:

    • J2EE documentation;
    • German homework + test that is in serious need of me looking at it;
    • none of the above.

I'm actually thinking I should do 'all of the above' and just see what I get done. Ideally I will be too busy to do any of it :)

inspired by Pieter Hooimeijer — #4 Well if I had to choose between homework and Java it'd be homework.. Lucky for me I don't have to deal with either :)

  6. Sista Kim:

We just got back from a concert: Colin Blunstone & Rod Argent. Colin is de well nown singer of 'She's not there', 'old and wise' time of the season'. Someone whose name doesn't ring a bell for most people, but when they here the songs mentioned above the reaction is 'ah is that him?'. The music was great. Unbelievable how an old man optains his singingvoice after being in the business for over 40 years. The theater was packed with diehard fans. Very nice!

As I already told you.. Korean class was nice. I still have to take a look at some grammar, but I can pretty much pick up where I left of last year. Today we got some sentences to translate from Dutch to Korean. Quite the assignment, because Korean is in no way related to the English or Dutch language system. Apart from a lot of English loanwords. Anyway I am motivated now and I will try and keep on going this time.

It is almost 01.30 now, so I am off to bed... Love ya all!

  7. hooimama:

We were at the concert too, although we don't belong to the diehard fans Kim mentioned. The director of the theatre told us people were there from all over Europe! Even Swedish or Norwegian people! And people from Heerjansdam of course! Kim is right about the voice and all! It was kind of noisy though, sometimes. This theatre is too small for that much sound I guess! I had a great time looking around too, some rows were actually moving all the time (the chairs I mean) because of the people couldn't keep still! And I never before saw an old dwarf play the bass guitar, haha!
The artists had to give several "encores" because people kept applauding and calling and whistling and stamping their feet and ...
inspired by Pieter Hooimeijer — #4 When we got home we tried to reach you, Pieter, but now I understand why that didn't wor out. I comforted myself by calling Clarice and Ted, because it was Ted's birthday. What did you do, both things or ..... just the being too busy part?
Love from the two oldies here!

  9. Sista Kim:

inspired by hooimama — #7 mom is right about the dwarf thing. His son was better looking behind the drums. aside from the great music a pretty wellknown bunch of people were on stage. Rod Urgent played with the Who, the bassplayer Jim Rodford has played with the Kinks, Colin Blunstone sang with the Alan Parsons Project... etc. Well look for yourself at http://www.colinblunstone.c... or http://www.rodargent.com

We are probably going to buy some more Zombies Cd's. ;-) Well, I am going to visit grandma now. TTYL
