Future Prospects Good M'kay...

Monday November 7th, in the middle of the night

Today I got an e-mail from Professor Weckesser:

Subject: Stormy night...

It's a dark and stormy night. The worst of the storm may have passed, but the distant rumbling of thunder lingers. The temperature has dropped, and you realize the next big storm will probably bring sleet and snow. You gaze out at the remnants of the storm. Street lights reflect off the wet roads. Lightning still flashes sporadically, illuminating the glistening gold and brown leaves that have washed down the street. You pull your sweater around you a little closer and think, "It's the perfect night to do some calculus!"

I'm happy to oblige. Homework 10 is now on the web page [...]

I have yet to write my German paper for tomorrow, so unfortunately math will have to wait. I'll be pretty busy for the rest of the month, actually. Between GREs, picking schools, and keeping up with everything else, I think I'll need plenty of stormy nights.

On the Road I
On the Road II
On the Road III
Fall Colors at Colgate.
Caution.

Anyway, we've been discussing Queuing Theory in my CS 440 class with Professor Ohsumi, my research advisor. I implemented a fairly simple model of this. My findings:

  • If you finish work faster than it comes in, you're doing peachy
  • If your works comes in faster than you can process it, stuff piles up in your queue

Hmm that sounds familiar... Anyway, I'm happy to report that all is well. Still, the rate at which I'm going right now is a little bit of a mental sprint -- not something I can keep up forever.

In the noteworthy department: tomorrow I will be picking courses for the last time at Colgate. I picked two of the courses that I'm going to take: Math and German. The other two... who knows. The CS department is offering exactly one class that I could feasibly take. It's 'Distributed Web Applications,' and it sounds like I might know a lot of it already.

Anyway it's time for me to write some more German. Cheers.

If your works comes in faster than you can process it, you buy extra hardware.. No such luck ey ;-)

Good to hear you're swamped but doing well, it's hard to believe you're actually almost done at Colgate. It doesn't seem very long ago we were told to "sit back and relax" on our first flight to (eventually anyway) Newark intl Airport, or was it JFK :p

Good luck on your tests, exams, work, and so on and so on and so on!

  2. sista Kim:

And when you think your week is not quite busy enough... then like your sister... find 30 other things to do and do them all at once ;-)

Have I told you lately how proud I am of both my brothers? Both doing so well, both being so intelligent. Yes, I am a little bit melancholic. Your sister always has a slight problem with changes. And off course all changes come at once. Pipi finishing his study at Colgate, Grandma being shipped of to some facility for elderly people... and making up my mind about going back to school (actually I will start with two classes in december).

Well, pipi, good luck on all your work and exams... pick out some nice classes!

I don't know how well you know Pieterson, but maybe an extra warning is necessary here! Or did you already find out what he's like when he's "not amused"?

inspired by Arjo Hooimeijer — #1 Yup been here for 3.5 years almost. Also been stuck in many more places (although never quite as bizarre as Saint John's).

inspired by sista Kim — #2 Yah grandma's finally out of the Stormnest... strange. Just when I was getting used to seeing her there...

inspired by Michael Tringali — #4 TRINGALI Use it wisely. Although seriously dude, what's wrong with Hoojimayer?

inspired by KJ — #5 He's actually a good math guy, so it'd be a shame if he switched to the English dept. I totally agree though -- that was powerful stuff. It was especially noteworth because homeworks 1-9 were announced by a form email (something like 'Homework n is now up on the website.';)

inspired by Hooimama — #7 Or did you already find out what he's like when he's "not amused"? You mean this?

Two more relatively quiet weeks and then your sister is going back to school. Starting 30 November I'll be a lawstudent. I'll start with just two courses (Introduction in public law and private law). If I like it enough I will start with the entire part-time course law next september. I might take another course in the third trimester this schoolyear, but that depends on our trip to America and my ballet performance in June.

How did your exam go Pipi? (look Michael, I can use it without consequences)

inspired by Bridget — #11 By the way, thanks for summarizing the nicknames ;) I actually took those pictures during the week following homecoming. Right now Colgate looks a little... erm... bleaker...

In related news, almost a year ago it was actually a little colder (and we had already had snow). I wonder -- if I blink, will it be November 2006? Cuz that would mean I missed the World Cup :(

  19. Pieter Hooimeijer:

inspired by hooimama — #18 Yup same thing :)

So yeah last week I took the Computer Science GRE, which is supposed to test anything you could have possibly picked during 3-4 years of college. It's tough to study for, since CS has so many specialty areas. Fortunately I won't find out what my score is until halfway through December.

At the moment, I'm preparing for the General GRE, which I'm taking in DC on Wednesday. The General GRE tests basic math and verbal skills. I have a 10-page list of words that I need to study. In fact, I have several versions of that 10-page list, so I can study the words in random order 8)

After the General GRE is over with, I'll be writing essays and sending out applications. It's a lot like my last year in high shool, when I went back and forth between the Wolfert and the American School, except I'm not missing that many classes ;)

  20. Sista Kim:

inspired by Pieter Hooimeijer — #19 Heey pipi, good luck on all that! I will try and call you tonight. I haven't spoken to you in ages. First we will have dinner at KJ's partens place.

Your brother asked me to join Tae Kwondo lessons in Hoogvliet. So I went there for the first time Yesterday (19 november). Though I am very afraid of getting kicked or punched it was actually quite fun! It (off course) is very diffirent from ballet, but it helps that I can pick up steps and movements rather quickly. The problem is I am very good at smuggling... in the sense of being flexibel enough to make a movement totally wrong but still standing up straight. Next week I will not be able to join, but the week after that KJ and Eelco will come with me.

    YEEHAA! ;-)

I upgraded the bex server to FreeBSD-6.0 and it's up and running :-)
So far for the good news..

The bad news is, I overlooked one minor detail, sshd now only listens on the default port again, so if you were wondering why it's unreachable.. O:-)

Good luck on the GRE tomorrow!
