Winter '06 Begins

Wednesday December 21st, early in the evening

Case Library at Colgate: Stripped.

In December of last year, I managed to post 16 times. I'm afraid that won't be happening this year :)

Anyway, I'm just around to add some pictures. In order, they're as folows:

  • Case Library at Colgate, in its current (stripped) state. Pretty sight, no? No.
  • Snow at Colgate, as seen from my room. This was about a week ago.
  • A Smart, parked in about 3m worth of space (ok maybe slightly more). Welcome to The Netherlands, where everything is small...
  • Various shots of the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, one of my graduate school choices. I visited the VU together with AJ this Monday, the day after I arrived in The Netherlands. It is located a couple of blocks away from the 'Schaats' (Ice Skate) building, which you can see here. Two faculty members were kind enough to take the time and meet with me, which was very informative. After that, AJ and I had lunch at the VU dining hall. Imagine what Colgate would be like if Frank sold wine...

Beyond that I am quite busy applying for graduate school (the VU and nine other schools) and all the associated paper work. I'm also trying to organize my trip to Korea, while learning a little 'more' Korean on the side. Happy Holidays and see y'all next year...

    inspired by Arjo Hooimeijer — #1 Yah the wine was all gone. Then again at EUR 1.85 who can really blame them. Who knows, it might just be an empty sign that sits there to attract new students.

    Either way, fun day. Actually, it was a good simulation of what my days there would be like--traveling there by train and all.

    White Christmas did not quite work out here. Now there's snow everywhere. so maybe the turn of the year will be a white one. I sure hope so. It looks quite beautiful! Well Pipi I am glad you had time to come home and spend the holidays with your family. I hope next time Kaleena will be able to join! Exciting times lie ahead... going to Korea and then your last trimester at Colgate. And last but not least your entire family visiting you in America. Looking forward to it!

    Pieter, it was nice to talk to you. For the ones wondering where Pieter is hanging out... At the moment Pieter is doing reseach in Korea. When I called him at what I thought was a decent time, in fact turned out to be after midnight... OOPS!

    Wooho I've got pictures. I'm writing my 'diary' on my (dino)Zaurus, so those brilliant insights into Korean culture will have to wait until I find some 'open' wireless somewhere. Here's a short summar:

    Day 0: Gruesome trip to Jeju-do.
    Day 1: Visited the tourist resort by Seogwipo-si.
    Day 2: Camped out at the hotel, submitted one of my grad school apps.

    No plans yet for the next few days, but we'll see :)

    inspired by Bridget — #11 Erm... don't get a gateway? ;) I've been looking at the tiny, lightweight models -- they aren't very 'powerful' but they should work fine for you. They tend to have better battery life than the larger models, and well... they're lighter :) Definitely make sure you have a look at the actual laptop before you get it (even if you decide to order online) -- make sure you like the keyboard and the screen.
