Spring Break '06 -- Decision Time

Sunday March 26th, in the middle of the night

And the theme of this week was... [drumroll] deciding what to do with my life. At this point, I basically get to pick between:

I visited the VU back in December (before I applied), so this past week I visited UVa and UCSB. Being the brilliant scheduler that I am, I was able to put together a wondefully exhausting itinerary (especially in combination with Kaleena's existing plans for the week). In general terms, this is what I've been up to:

  • Friday, March 10th: Drive to Syracuse Airport. I wasn't able to find a ride for Saturday morning, so Linda was kind enough to take me shopping until about 9pm. After some feeble attempts at getting a hotel for less than $80, I spent the 'night' at the airport.
  • Saturday, March 11th: I slept until 4:30am, at which point I checked in for my 6am flight. I then travelled to Detroit Michigan and subsequently to Washington DC. Kaleena picked me up and we spent a couple of days in the DC area, which rocked.
  • Monday, March 13th: Got haircuts together. Mine cost $7 8)
  • Tuesday, March 14th: Drove from Centreville VA to Charlottesville VA. Picked up my schedule at UVa, then had dinner with Chris, a friend of Kaleena's and a grad student at UVa.
  • Wednesday, March 15th: Spent the morning and early afternoon meeting with five professors and several grad students. Kaleena got to 'research' downtown Charlottesville in the meantime, which apparently wasn't too bad. After my meeting, Kaleena and I drove around Charlottesville before returning to Centreville for a birthday party.
  • Thursday, March 16th: Kaleena's parents + sister arrived in Charlottesville -- watched some DVDs with them.
  • Friday, March 17th: Walked around the DC mall together with Bridget and Kaleena's sister. We visited some museums and, more importantly, acquired food at them.
  • Saturday, March 18th: Flew to Santa Barbara CA. My flight to Los Angeles was delayed, so once I got to LAX I ran for about a mile to my connecting flight. As it turned out, my flight from LAX to Santa Barbara was also delayed. Once I finally got to Santa Barbara, I spent about 5 hours walking from the hotel to the UCSB campus and back. First time seeing the Pacific Ocean from this end!
  • Sunday, March19th and Monday, March 20th: Recruitment event time! My trip to UCSB was actually during their planned visiting days (as opposed to my UVa visit, which was scheduled separately). This meant that I got to meet some of the other prospective students in addition to the UCSB profs and students. General impression: my decision will be tough :-S

So yah... that was the very short version of my Spring Break. I got to see Kaleena in the first time for much too long, and I got to visit two fairly amazing places for grad school.

I'm currently on the plane back to Washington (although I may not be able to post this until after I get back to Colgate on Wednesday). I now have three weeks to pick a place, after which I'll need to start worrying about getting a place to live, how and when to move my stuff, etc. Oh and if I'm not mistaken, I have about six weeks of classes left to ace, and a research project to finish 8-)

Update

Well I've been back at Colgate for a good 72 hours now. I spent Wednesday morning with Kaleena before going back to Colgate. My trip back was supposed to go through Detroit and Syracuse, but a clogged lavatory apparently was too much to handle for the Northwest/KLM people.

As a result, my flight to Detroit got delayed long enough to make me miss my connection. Fortunately I was already getting rerouted by the time everyone else found out. I eventually got to Syracuse through Pittsburgh, about two hours later than planned. (Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Tucker for picking me up that late 8-) )

At Pittsburgh I had short layover, which I used to figure out if US Airways had received my suitcase in Washington. Short version: my suitcase got delivered to Colgate the day after I got back (barely 20 hours after me) -- first time my suitcase has ever gotten "lost!"

Anyway, the more important news is that I got into RPI in Troy, NY. Gotta have choices :-/

    Pieterson, you really have to post things more often, we really enjoy reading and looking at those pictures! Good luck on this difficult decision. Whatever it's gonna be is ok with us as long as you choose what you like most! You don't have to consider what would be the best destination for our next vacation ;-)
