Good News & Bad News

Monday April 10th, late in the afternoon

UVA

Turns out my academic advisor, Professor Sanchis, passed away this weekend. She had been away from Colgate for about a year due to her illness, so it was not exactly surprising. Before she left, she was basically my point of reference in the Computer Science Department, starting way back in the Summer of 2002 (before I got to Colgate). At Colgate, especially during my junior year, I stopped by her office at least a couple of times a week to debate CS theory and University politics.

The good news is that *I picked* yesterday, and it's University of Virginia. The forms went out today, so as of now it's pretty much set. I'm currently working on the financial certification paperwork and such -- fun stuff. I may also make a quick trip to Charlottesville within the next few weeks (to pick an apartment).

  16. Pieter Hooimeijer:

    From www.colgatealumni.org/:

Laura Sanchis, Professor of Computer Science, dies at age 49

    4/11/06

Laura Sanchis, Professor of Computer Science, died Sunday, April 9th at her parents’ home in Syracuse, NY. She was 49 years old. Laura joined the Colgate faculty in 1989, after having completed degrees at Syracuse University, Cornell University, and the University of Rochester.

Laura was a dedicated scholar, specializing in the fields of computer science and mathematics. Her research centered on theoretical computer science, algorithms, and compiler design. Over the years she published articles in eminent journals, such as Discrete Mathematics, Mathematical Systems Theory, Theoretical Computer Science, The Journal of Graph Theory, and in the DIMACS Series in Discrete Mathematics. Colleagues on the faculty have commented that, as a researcher, Laura was animated by a “fierce quiet joy” that pervaded her scholarship.

In the classroom Laura was known as a devoted and beloved teacher, with an uncommon talent for making complex materials accessible to students of all levels. By involving students in her personal research, and directing them with a rare combination of deft guidance and steady encouragement, Laura provided the opportunity for undergraduates to experience, first-hand, the thrill that comes from testing familiar theoretical models and discovering new results. Furthermore, Laura created a classroom environment that provided students with the opportunity to realize their fullest potential. As one former student noted, Laura’s classroom was “a comfortable place where students went not just to be educated, but to mature and thrive.” Consequently, and much to her credit, Laura leaves behind a legacy of students who point to her passionate teaching as one of the most important influences that inspired them to undertake graduate study.

Colleagues in the Computer Science department remember Laura’s quiet positive spirit, her good-natured humor, and her professional generosity. Since her arrival at Colgate, Laura has contributed heavily to the evolution of the Computer Science curriculum by teaching traditional subjects in innovative ways; and, also, by finding inventive ways to bring her unique interests to new courses. Here, her contributions include a cryptology course (adopted by the First-Year Seminar Program and later taught as a Core SP course), along with advanced courses in the analysis of algorithms and the theories of computing. Finally, Laura was also a capable administrator, serving as department chair.

Not least of all, Laura was highly regarded by academic colleagues outside of the university. In 1991-93 and 1994-97 she was awarded grants by the National Science Foundation; and during the spring of 1993 she was a visiting scholar at the Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science (Rutgers University).

At the time she became ill, Laura was serving as on-campus secretary for Phi Beta Kappa.

Laura is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Luis Sanchis, and her sister Gabriela R. Sanchis, Associate Professor of Mathematics at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. Cards and letters can be sent to the family at 112 Diana Avenue, Syracuse, NY 13210-4231. Plans for an on-campus event to commemorate Laura will be announced at a later time
