Grad School: Semester Two

Saturday February 24th, around lunchtime

Scheduling Madness.
Other people working frantically.

It's six weeks into Semester II at UVa. I can tentatively say that I'm getting more work done than well... any time in recent history. It seems like last semester was mostly fun and games compared to my current schedule...

Speaking of schedules... A bunch of my friendly neighborhood grad students have conned me into using Google Calendar. The result is very artistic; the screenshot shows my calendar intersected with those of seven others. My own schedule (in light blue) is not quite as daunting by itself, fortunately.

I've been TAing CS415, the undergraduate version of Programming Languages. I commonly refer to it as baby PL or 渭PL. In addition to attending class, grading, and all the usual fun, I also get to do discussion sections on Mondays and Wednesdays. To give you an idea of what these are like, here are some notes I prepared for the childrens [sic]: Section One and Section Four. The discussion sections take up way too much time, but they're highly entertaining (e.g. when I trick my students into proving something that's impossible 8-)). Rewarding... almost.

Apple Pie II

In terms of real work, most of the 'empty' areas in my calendar are taken up by reading papers and doing research (add air quotes for emphasis). After 4.5 weeks of The Good Life, Wes has assigned me to do a project for him over the next seven weeks. This procedure, among other things, involved taking my free will away. According to the latest reports, he is now just short of majority control (49%). That's mostly just a technicality though.

This semester has been a bit lower-key than last. I basically feel guilty whenever I'm not physically doing work, so it's hard to get outside of a 100m radius of Olsson. There have been some fun events though. Of note were a birthday party, a group brunch on Valentine's Day, and the occasional group-cooking-dinner effort.

I've also taken to producing baked goods as a stress reliever. I recently discovered the springform that we used for spekkoek last semester, so I decided to put it to good use. I was able to con Isabelle into letting me use her kitchen, which had the added benefit of having someone around who can actually... you know... cook/bake stuff. So far, this has resulted in strawberry cheesecake (last week), and in Dutch Apple Pie (yesterday). The latter was mostly according to Kim's recipe 8-). The last picture shows me tasting the crust; it was *that* awesome.

Anyway... *guilt* it's time for me to do some work 8-) Cheers.

    Good morning Pieterson!

    Have a nice day!

Could you send me a part of that apple pie of yours?
Must taste very good according to the expression on your face :-)

Most of the empty areas in my calendar are taken by that two feet tall nephew of yours. He wishes you all the best. Enjoy!

That apple pie looks delicious, and judging by your expression it was!

Is the quarter next to the cheesecake there for scale? Or does it represent that almost a quarter of the cheesecake has been eaten?

Hope everyone is doing well! How is Nathan doing?

  7. Sista Kim:

inspired by Bridget — #6 Nathan's doing very good! His parents both had the flu the past week, but Nathan just had a cold. He's is now turning from his back to his belly, but doesn't know how to turn back LOL... so that's quite frustrating for our little man. He now gets fruit and vegies... he likes carrots, beans, apples and pears a lot. He laughs a lot and he starts to look like a real boy (no longer a baby).

inspired by Bridget — #6 Somehow I thought the quarter would be amusing to have there... I suppose I'm too used to seeing iPod reviews and the like :-p

I've updated the Valentine's Day pictures, courtesy of Karolina who sent me the high res versions.

    Back to work...

I can vouch for the apple pie since Pieter made it all by himself. Wait till you see the rest of the baking we have planned. I'll make sure they are all photographed. :)

I tried to tell several times that I can't wait to see those pictures and that I wondered if we are "talking" about the same guy! The Pieter I know even expects his breakfast to be ready when he -finally- decides to get out of bed :-) But .. it's different when your mom is around I guess ;-)
