Pile o'Work

Friday March 30th, in the middle of the night

Baklava I

It has been brought to my attention that I have neglected to post about *several* baking attempts. OMG!111eleven.

Since last month there have been four additional attempts at coming up with the least healthy dessert. If I remember correctly, they were (in no particular order): more apple pie, baklava, cheesecake, and blueberry pie.

Baklava II
Blueberry Pie I
Blueberry Pie II
Pieter, Feigning Work
Pieter's Hand, Feigning Work

Cyclic.

The cheesecake was somewhat of a bust, so we will never speak of it again... or something ominous sounding like that. The baklava included a rather random selection of whatever nuts I was able to find (including peanuts). It also had twice the honey sauce that it needed, making it rather sweet and tooth destroying. The blueberry pie is currently sitting on my desk, and it's probably the best one in the batch. I was "responsible" for the crust; the actual substance was all Isabelle (unsurprisingly).

Aside from the baking, this past month has been reasonably busy. Where by 'reasonably' I mean: 'unreasonably.' I've fenced with my venerable adviser a couple of times, there was a quick trip to DC a few weeks ago, and most of the rest of my time was spent panicking about work. Fortunately I hang out with other people who panic about work, so I blend right in.

A significant portion of my time is spent TAing for CS415 -- Programming Languages of Doom and Despair. I added the last part myself. I also get to make up the assignments these days, allowing me to be even more sadistic than usual. Note that most of these assignments are just slightly modified versions of what Wes gives me, so aside from random details it's very much not my work.

I got to teach a lecture the other week, which was a ton of fun (for me, at least). This was in addition to my usual discussion sections, which are a little more ad hoc. I spent half the night making slides (time management skills shining through there), and subsequently had issues staying awake during the actual class. The last remaining evidence of this wonderful event can be found here.

Well then. I think it's my bedtime. In unrelated news: The Netherlands is an awesome place to raise kids, according to UNICEF. Good job Kim & Kees.

Comments:

  1. Hooimama:

We already knew that the Netherlands is an awesome place to raise kids! That's why we raised three of those awesome kids :-) I really wonder why one of them felt the need to "move" to the USA . . .

But: thanks, Pieterson, it's good to hear from you again in your own special way!

  2. Isabelle:

I resent you insulting my kitchen's supply of baking goods when you decide, on a whim, to make things like baklava. Why on earth would I stock a solid full 2 cups of nuts? You're lucky I had 2 cups of random nuts to fill your baklava needs. (Might I add, for the Hooifamily, that the baklava turned out very nicely despite being a product of Pieter's baking skill alone?)

  5. Westible:

The baklava and the blueberry pie were both quite good -- although I was able to take one look at the pie and decide that Pieter had made the crust: he has a distinctive "spice cake" style.

I'm tempted to say that Pieter was climbing the tree to avoid his nagging advisor, perhaps mistranslating the idiom "drive me up a wall" as "drive me up a tree". :-)

inspired by Hooimama — #3 I'm in San Francisco right now being entertained by Google and it's messing with my timezones. It was only 11pm here when I wrote that.

inspired by Westible — #5 Actually, I believe he was trying to inspire your AST lectures further; the PL tree as it were. Also, there may have been less avoiding your nagging and more avoiding your judo chop wrestling. Wait, that came later.....

  7. Pieter Hooimeijer:

inspired by Hooimama — #1 "special" Eh -- thanks :-p

inspired by Isabelle — #2 We actually only ended up with one cup of nuts -- that's why I had too much syrup... gawd...

inspired by Sista Kim — #4 Hmm I haven't done chocolate cake in a while... although there's been chocolate mousse... That doesn't count as 'baking' though.

inspired by Westible — #5 I think it's a natural response to your "goats in a tree" slide. (See e.g. here)

inspired by Westible — #5 Nice to meet you, although it's in a kind of funny way and thank you for "dispensing" wisdom in the neighbourhood of our son, even if it is in trees. The both of you don't look like goats .. at least not from where I am looking at the picture! inspired by Isabelle — #6 Entertained in what way? Messing with your timezones? Or some real entertainment? inspired by Pieter Hooimeijer — #7 No thanks, hahahaha! Did you realise AJ is in Ireland at the moment?

inspired by De moeder — #12 Isabelle dispenses random phone calls from California at the moment. Unfortunately I foresee a busy week two days from now, so my next use of kitchen supplies may be a while.

I need an emergency shipment of Xyzal by the way. For the uninitiated: Xyzal is a third-generation antihistamine, and the only drug known to man that:

    • helps my hayfever, which shows up every other year or so
    • doesn't shut down my brain every time I take it

    So there. *rubs eyes*

So many comments I don't know who to respond to!

The baklava looks good, despite the lack/overabundance of nuts/honey. I haven't made baklava in such a long time...which I guess is good for my teeth.

Kudos to Isabelle on the blueberry pie (and the iron fist)! I hope to meet you in person someday, too, especially with all of these pies and cakes that seem to be near whenever you're around! hehe.
